The Supreme Court, on Saturday, refused to extend the 30 April deadline for conversion of private diesel taxis into CNG.

The bench was conducting a special hearing on Saturday to deal with pleas arising in a 1984 PIL on pollution, filed by environmentalist MC Mehta.

However, the diesel cabs with all India permit are exempt from this order (to convert into CNG) and will be allowed on the roads.

Senior advocate Shyam Diwan, appearing for some taxi owners made a strong plea for modification of the order as there is no technology at all for it. Diwan said:

We will not be able to earn our livelihood. Moreover, we have to pay the bank.

The Supreme Court will now hear the matter on 9 May.
