At the Chennai airport, superstar Rajinikanth was accosted by the press and asked about the anti-BJP coalition on Monday, 12 November.

There is a mega alliance that is being formed. Is the BJP that dangerous?

That is what they (those who are forming the anti-BJP alliance) think. Then definitely it should be like that.

The statement adds fuel to the speculation that Rajinikanth might favour the BJP should he choose to contest the general elections next year.

After an unsuccessful foray into politics in the early 90s, Rajinikanth had steered clear of any political activity, save for the occasional politically-loaded dialogues in his movies. But last year, Rajinikanth announced his entry into politics and formed an organisation, which he intends to transform into a political party soon.

Thanks to his Kannadiga/Marathi roots (Rajinikanth’s birth name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad), the superstar has always been considered ‘not Dravidian’ enough for Tamil Nadu’s opposition party DMK. He has also had a long-standing feud with the ruling AIADMK. His affinity to religion, which he practises and propounds openly, is yet another factor that separates him from the Dravidian parties.

Whether these differences translate into a pro-BJP approach and a coalition is something that only time can tell.
