Amid Tensions, PM Modi to Meet Chinese Prez Xi Jinping on 23 June
Modi and Jinping will meet on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting on 23 June.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet President of China, Xi Jinping on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on 23 June, reports claim citing sources.
- The meeting will happen at a crucial time when the two countries are currently facing diplomatic tensions due to controversy of India’s bid for Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
- China, siding with Pakistan – which is also trying to enter the elite nuclear group – has opposed to India’s membership, citing the fact that India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
- On Monday, the US made an appeal to the 48 member countries to allow India to be a part of the nuclear club. Unanimous agreement of all countries is necessary to gain NSG membership.
