G20 Summit: India Will Play Host in 2022, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese premier Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, 30 November, held a trilateral meeting, the second among the three countries after a gap of 12 years, on the sidelines of the G-20 summit here to discuss cooperation in various areas.

The Russia-India-China meeting came hours after Prime Minister Modi, his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump held their first trilateral meeting on the margins of the summit. PM Modi termed the meeting ‘JAI’ (Japan, America, India), literally translating to victory.

Modi arrived in the Argentinian capital on Thursday to attend the 13th G20 summmit.

US, China Agree to Halt New Tariffs After 1 January

The United States and China agreed Saturday in a long-anticipated summit to hold off on new tariffs after 1 January, Chinese state media said following a months-long trade war.

The China Daily and Chinese international broadcaster CGTN both said President Donald Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to halt tariffs "after January 1" -- when Washington has been set to impose USD200 billion in new tariffs.

India to Host G-20 Summit in 2022

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that India will host the G-20 summit in 2022, the year the country would celebrate the 75th anniversary of its Independence.

The G-20 is a grouping of the world's 20 major economies.

Modi made the announcement at the closing ceremony of the two-day summit held in Argentina's capital.

Italy was to host the international forum in 2022.

South African President to be India's Republic Day Chief Guest in 2019

Briefing the media on the G20 Summit, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held a number of bilateral visits on the sidelines of the summit.

“The area Prime Minister touched on in general with leaders of the European Union, Netherland PM and Germany Chancellor, was the issue of jointly combating terrorism which is a global phenomenon,” Gokhale added.

He also said that the Argentinian Prime Minister is keen to make a visit to India and PM Modi has extended an invitation to South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa to be chief guest for India's Republic Day in 2019 and Ramaphosa accepted it.

Trump Cancels G20 Press Conference 'Out of Respect' to Bush Family

US President Donald Trump cancelled a press conference planned for Saturday, 1 December at the G20 summit, saying he wanted to show respect to the family of late President George HW Bush.

"Out of respect for the Bush Family and former President George HW Bush we will wait until after the funeral to have a press conference," Trump tweeted.
