Mukul Roy was suspended from the Trinamool Congress for six years, on 25 September. Earlier in the day, he had announced that he would be resigning from the party.

Once second-in-command in the Trinamool, MP Mukul Roy on 25 August announced his resignation from the working committee of the TMC, and also said that he’ll resign from the Rajya Sabha post Durga Puja.

Senior TMC leader, Partha Chatterjee questioned his intention to quit the party after Durga Puja and said:

Mamata had given Mukul a chance. But, he’s making an attempt to undermine the party. If he wants to leave, why isn’t he leaving? Why drag the entire process till after Puja? Why is he using Puja as an excuse? We are suspending Mukul for six years.

This comes only a day after reports that the party high-command was unhappy with him after he inaugurated suspended party leader Kunal Ghosh’s Durga Puja in Kolkata.

Roy’s announcement is crucial as the party had censured him just a few days ago for hobnobbing with BJP leaders. The state BJP chief, Dilip Ghosh, had also earlier said that Roy is in touch with leaders of the BJP in Delhi, but stopped short of stating if he will join the BJP.

Roy is also an accused in the Sarada chit-fund scam.
