Casteist Ad Invites Brahmin Girls Aged 10+ to ‘Culture’ Camp
If you are Brahmin, female, unmarried and ten years of age or older, this Republic Day, the opportunity of a lifetime awaits you! Or perhaps not.
Sarma Sastrigal, RSS Pracharak from the 70s – author of ‘a comprehensive volume’ (in the words of his blog) titled ‘The Hindu Tradition,’ and according to his Twitter bio, a teacher of the Vedas to “those who have retired from the services” – is generously hosting a free camp for unmarried Brahmin women, aged 10 and older in Chennai on 26 December 2018. And to sweeten the deal, he is also promising an arranged lunch. The purpose of the camp? To "learn about our culture and great tradition,” says an invite.
Social Media Flak
Many have called out this event for being downright casteist. Many have also ridiculed its requirement of "full day attendance" and "participation is compulsory" policies along with the age bar, sex bar and even a bar based on marital status.
Yet others have defended Sarma Sastrigal and his initiative. While some have expressed their disapproval of the event, they have maintained that the ex-RSS Pracharak is a ‘noble’ and ‘knowledgeble’ man and a deserving torchbearer of the "Sampradaya."
Sarma Sastrigal has organised similar day camps in the past, a recent one being on 'Sthreegal dharmam in the Vaidhika maargam,' for ladies, held on 15 October 2017.
