Congress attacked the BJP over the ruling BJP Government’s continued silence, inaction, and ineffectiveness in restraining the Karni Sena and the violence surrounding the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat.

Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi addressed the media on 25 January, after the Karni Sena continued its attacks on theatres across the country.

‘The BJP has no Accountability’

When you are confronted with a situation where law and order suffers, where the people suffer, where children suffer, then who takes responsibility? When you choose to get elected, when you speak in various campaigns about taking charge of law and order, where are you when a situation like this arises? This is what I have a problem with. This is the responsibility of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and they should be ashamed of themselves that they continue to play politics over such issues.
Priyanka Chaturvedi, Spokesperson, Congress

‘Violence Could Have Been Prevented’

Chaturvedi went on to question why the ruling government couldn’t address the concerns of the protesters with dialogue, targeting Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Smriti Irani.

Why is the Centre silent? We’ve been appealing from the beginning. Our information broadcasting minister, sitting in such an important position, can tweet 24/7 about how many meetings the PM attends, how many foreign trips he makes, and how he spends his time. But she can’t sit with the protesters and find a solution to this issue?
Priyanka Chaturvedi, Spokesperson, Congress

She went on to ask why the crisis couldn’t have been averted, “Before certifiying the movie couldn’t she answer the protesters’ questions? They could have avoided this whole situation if they’d handled it properly and addressed concerns one by one.”

‘A Government is Supposed to Uphold Law & Order’

National Spokesperson for Congress Randeep Surjewala demanded answers from the ML Khattar Government in Haryana about the attack on a school bus in Haryana that was caught on camera.

The way a Haryana Roadways bus was stopped and torched in broad daylight, the way the bus was stoned and terrified children were hiding under their seats, was shameful. There was no law, or order to be seen. Whose responsibility is it ensure the law is upheld? The government’s.
Randeep Surjewala, MLA, Congress, in a statement to CNN News18
