- In a move to expedite the probe into some high profile cases such as the VVIP chopper scam and that of the alleged loan fraud by beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallaya, the CBI has formulated a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe these cases under an Additional Director.
- Sources say the investigation will be headed by Additional Director Rakesh Asthana, a 1984 batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre who also headed the state SIT into the burning of the Sabarmati Express in February 2002 and also the Fodder Scam Probe.
- The probe into the chopper scam after the conviction of former heads of Finmeccanica and AgustaWestland by an Italian court changed “the understanding” of the investigating agency regarding the Rs 3,600 deal.
- The case relating to Mallya is that of loans of thousands of crores of rupees taken by Kingfisher Airlines and its diversion ton foreign accounts.
