The meteorological department has predicted that the monsoon season this year will be above par after two years of drought. The forecast will certainly thrill the BJP government which is hoping that the monsoon season will uplift the farming economy, reduce water shortages, increase growth and all-in-all gain the political party praise.

A good monsoon will be in sync with the Budget’s political economy that focuses on rural India through substantial investments in irrigation, water body renewal, farm insurance, increased credit, soil health cards and organic farming.

The Rs 35,900 crore spending that the Budget had allocated for the farm sector was an urgent political response to the ailing agriculture sector.

If cash transfers for fertilisers work accordingly, the Centre plans on expanding its Aadhaar-linked schemes to adjunct better farm incomes with effective targeting of subsidies in the future.

Good monsoons can sustain cotton and sugar exports will also reducing imports of edible oils and pulses. Most importantly, it will help to contain price rises that generally become difficult to manage.
