Cut-offs for various University of Delhi colleges are expected to increase again this year due to the moderation policy. Around 40,000 students from the Central Board of Secondary Education scored 95 percent marks in class 12. Experts are of the view that this will have a direct impact on the cut-offs as well.
As part of the ‘Admissions Open’ campaign, The Quint received queries from students who were eager to know about their career prospects. Here are excerpts from a chat with Jayita Ekka, career counsellor at College Dekho, who offered tips to students preparing to apply to different colleges:
1. I’m from the Commerce stream and want to apply for a BCom or BCom (Hons) course. With 81.2 percent, can I apply to the Indraprastha University?

Answer: Yes, you can apply to the Indraprastha University (IPU). With 81 percent, you might have to wait for the second or third cut-off list. There is no entrance exam for the BCom and BCom (Hons) courses.
Our prediction is that since the cut-offs for DU might be higher than previous years, many students who fail to get admission will move towards IPU. Since IPU has several affiliated colleges, you can easily pursue a BCom (Hons) programme.
2. I have got 88 percent in class 12. Can you suggest colleges both in Delhi as well as Kolkata where I can apply for BCom?

Answer: This year, the CBSE has surprised everyone, so the number of students who’ve scored 90-plus is high. While getting into a DU college should have been a cakewalk with 88 percent, you might have to wait till the fifth or sixth cut-off list. As a safe bet, you should apply to colleges in Kolkata as well.
There are many reputed colleges in Kolkata offering BCom courses. Some of them are Maulana Azad College, St Xavier’s College, Heramba Chandra College, Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, Shivnath Shastri College, Seth Anandaram Jaipuria College, Shri Shikshayatan College, JD Birla Institute, and many more.
3. I’m a student from the Humanities stream and have scored 96.8 percent in class 12. I want to try for civil services, since my sole aim is to be an IAS officer. My question is whether I should go for BA Programme at DU or TISS?
– Aravind J Nampoothiry
Answer: If you clear the TISS exam, then go ahead with admission. TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) is more popular for its postgraduate programmes. I'm not saying that its undergraduate programmes are less competent, but DU is overall considered to be the best. Also, the exposure will be more than what you will experience at TISS.
Why is this experience important? It’s because at DU you will meet a lot of students who are going through the same phase and whose career objective is to clear the IAS exam, so you will be among like-minded people.
