The amount of money collected as fines by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration in 2017 is significantly higher than the preceding few years.

Fines amounting to Rs 4,76,075 were collected from 1 April 2017 to 9 December 2017, as compared to Rs 1,64,000 collected from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017, revealed a report by The Indian Express, which cited data received via an RTI application.

Moreover, between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2016, an amount of Rs 2,76,655 was collected in fines.

Among the major incidents that have attracted imposition of fines on students are the 9 February 2016 incident, wherein it was alleged that anti-national slogans were raised during an event, as well as protests over the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmad in October the same year.

Lamenting the collection of fines by the university authorities, Geeta Kumari, the previous president of the JNU Students' Union, told the daily:

“Fines are being slapped on known activists to stop them from engaging in student politics, since any disciplinary case prevents one from contesting elections as per Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.”
