Steps to Minimise Evaluation Blunders

Facing flak over evaluation errors in answer scripts of Class 10 and 12 board exams, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had initiated action against 130 teachers in the country, PTI reported.

Similar action was ordered by more regional offices against schools, teachers or coordinators where evaluation errors had been found.

The Quint in May 2018 had carried a story on how the CBSE was unfairly moderating marks of students .

Students can apply for re-evaluation only after retotalling. Accoding to The Times of India, CBSE lets two teachers evaluate each paper. Anurag Tripathi, CBSE Secretary told the daily that the two-teacher evaluation system has been a success and over 99.6 percent copies were getting correctly evaluated, adding that the 0.4 percent error is due to pressure on evaluators.

“We have tried to minimise the errors, which – from verification to re-evaluation – are at an all-time low, and CBSE will continue its efforts," he told The Times of India.

The CBSE had, on 1 June, had started the process of re-evaluation for those who had appeared for the Class 10 and 12 board examinations this year.

The board had declared both the Class 10 and Class 12 results in the last week of May. However, only candidates who were unsatisfied with the marks they were awarded had applied for the re-evaluation process.
