The markets also got a boost due to appreciation in rupee and softening of crude oil price. The rupee strengthened 12 paise to 70.13 against the US dollar in early trade. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.24 per cent lower at $74.17 per barrel.

The Tata Steel stock went up by almost 7 percent in intra-day trading, after the company Thursday reported a rise consolidated revenue to Rs 1,59,089.57 crore, up from Rs 1,24,990.79 crore.

However, auto stocks took a beating with Tata Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, Bajaj Auto and Maruti losing the most.
