Closing Bell: Sensex Closes Above 40,000, Nifty at 11,850

Keeping up the post-Diwali momentum on Wednesday, 30 October, markets closed near a five month high. BSE Sensex rose 0.55 percent to 40,051.87 and the NSE Nifty 50 rose 0.54 percent to end at 11,850.25.
Equity markets had seen a surge in the morning as benchmark index Sensex reclaimed the 40,000-mark in morning trade.
The 30-share BSE index gained 174 points to open at 40,055.63. At 9:20 am, the index had slipped under the key level, but was still gaining more than a 100 points.
50-share NSE Nifty too was up more than 0.25 percent and trading above 11,800-levels.
On Tuesday, Sensex closed with a gain of 582 points on hopes of more economic stimulus measures and income tax cuts. Bourses saw a broad-based buying throughout the day as sentiment was further boosted by encouraging quarterly corporate earnings and US-China trade deal optimism.
On Wednesday morning, all sectoral sub-indices with the exception of Nifty Auto were in the green. Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, Infosys and HDFC Bank were among the top gainers while Tata Motors, Yes Bank and Tata Steel stocks were among the laggards.
