Indian equity benchmark NSE Nifty 50 registered extended gains for the fourth consecutive trading session on Monday, 9 September, making it its longest gaining streak since 4 July.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended 0.44 percent higher at 37,145 points and the NSE Nifty 50 closed higher above 11,000, gaining 56.58 points and 0.58 percent.
Indian equity benchmarks had opened lower on Monday, led by the declines in HDFC Bank Ltd and Reliance Industries Ltd.
The S&P BSE Sensex fell as much as 0.52 percent to 36,791 points and the NSE Nifty 50 fell as much as 0.51 percent to 10,890.85 points. The broader market index represented by the NSE Nifty 500 Index fell as much as 0.41 percent.
About 1,167 stocks advanced and 608 shares declined on National Stock Exchange.
Indian markets will remain shut on Tuesday on account of Muharram.
