Israel’s Gantz Races to Form Government

After weeks of talks over a new Israeli government have gone around in circles, Benjamin Netanyahu's rival Benny Gantz had just two days left Monday to form a coalition and become prime minister.

Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party and Gantz's centrist Blue and White coalition achieved near parity in September's repeat elections, but even with allied parties both fell short of the 61 seats needed to form a majority in parliament.

Netanyahu was first given 28 days to form a coalition government but failed, so President Reuven Rivlin granted Gantz a similar timeframe.

15 People Killed in Coal Mine Blast in China

At least fifteen people were killed and nine others injured in a coal mine gas explosion in north China's Shanxi Province, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The incident happened on Monday when 35 miners were working underground at the coal mine in Pingyao County when the blast happened, the Shanxi Administration of Coal Mine Safety said.

Chhattisgarh: Three Naxals Arrested in Bijapur

Three Naxals, including a woman, were arrested on Monday from a field in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, a senior police official said.

He identified the three as Podiyam Nagesh (26), Kadti Chandaiyya (45) and Madvi Mase (22), and said the arrests were made by a team of the CRPF and local police near Polampalli village under Basaguda police station limits.

Amnesty International, citing credible reports, said Tuesday it believes at least 106 people have been killed during protests in Iran over a rise in government-set gasoline prices. US Welcomes Release of Hostages by Taliban in Afghanistan

The US on Tuesday welcomed the release of two hostages by the Taliban in Afghanistan, describing it a hopeful sign for efforts to end the decades-long conflict in the country. American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weeks, both professors at the American University in Kabul, were kidnapped at gunpoint in August 2016. Both men were successfully recovered on Tuesday and are currently receiving medical care and other support from the United States Government.

A Dutch ferry crew found 25 migrants in a refrigerated container on a boat sailing to Britain on Tuesday and forced the vessel to return to port in the Netherlands, police and emergency services said.

The stowaways received medical attention at the port of Vlaardingen, near Rotterdam, with two being transferred to hospital for more care, they said.
