More than 3,500 people have been rescued in Karnataka’s rain-hit Kodagu district where six people were killed even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 19 August, assured chief minister HD Kumarswamy of all help to tackle the flood situation in various parts of the state.

The district administration was managing the rescue and relief work, along with the army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies, and have rescued more than 3,500 people so far, Kumaraswamy told President Ram Nath Kovind, who also called up to inquire about the situation in the state, according to a statement from the chief minister’s office.

Operations are on to rescue those stranded at various places, it added.

2. Protestors Play Music to Oppose Cutting of Trees

While most Bengalureans were lazing on a Sunday, Indiranagar residents along with Swaratma band, known for their singing for social causes, registered their protest against the proposed chopping of trees for remodelling of Indiranagar BDA.

Actors Chetan, Sruthi Hariharan, AAP's Mohan Dasari and Srinivas Alavili of Citizens for Bengaluru also joined the residents of Indiranagar and registered their protest.

Jishnu of Swaratma band said, "We have been performing at various venues like Delhi, Mumbai etc. After we got to know that 171 trees will be axed, we thought why not sing for the trees? So we decided to perform below the venue of trees like Peepal tree, Rain Tree, Banyan Tree and Pride of Indian tree."

3. BCCI Shifts Quadrangular Series to Bengaluru

The BCCI decided to shift the venue of the Quadrangular series to Bengaluru after another day of play was lost due to rains in Vijayawada.

After the first two games at Mulapadu, Vijayawada, were called off due to poor ground conditions, the third match of the Quadrangular Series at Krishna involving India A and India B was also washed out today without a ball being bowled due to incessant rain.

Given the grim situation, the BCCI decided to shift the remaining matches of the series to Alur and M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.

4. BBMP Demolishes Around 400 Houses in Bellandur

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Saturday demolished around 400 houses at Kariyammana Agrahara near Bellandur by terming the settlement as an 'encroachment. Around 1,500 people were rendered homeless as earth digging equipment moved in and razed tin-roofed houses to the ground.

There was tension in the area for some time as the residents protested stating that they had been staying in the area for over eight years and no prior notices were issued by the civic agency about the demolition. Many of the residents worked as maids, drivers, waste pickers and security guards and hailed from Uttar Pradesh, , Assam and West Bengal.

5. Woman Found Hanging in Cubbon Park

A 21-year-old woman allegedly killed herself in Cubbon Park on Saturday night.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning when a security guard noticed her body hanging from a tree. Soon, the police were alerted.

The police identified the deceased as Santhoshi N of Nepal who used to work in a spa in UB City. She was living in a rented house along with her father at D’Souza Layout, near Vittal Mallya Road.

The police said Santhoshi was in a relationship with Naresh, a private company employee. On Saturday evening, Naresh had taken her to his house to introduce her to his parents. Naresh’s parents objected to their plan to get married saying that they belonged to different castes, according to the police.

Upset over this, Santhoshi had an argument with Naresh and his parents, before leaving their house, the police said.
