In a case of superstition overriding rational thinking, a priest in Karnataka’s Mandya district has suffered burn injuries while walking on burning coals.

Seven priests took part in the Kandotsava festival at the Kalabhairaveshwara temple where they were supposed to walk on burning coals. One priest named Guddappa Kumar fell midway through the attempt to run on an almost ten-metre-long path of the red hot coals. The heavy, flower-bedecked arrangement that he was holding over his head perhaps caused him to lose balance.

People rushed to rescue him. But Kumar suffered burn injuries on his legs and has been hospitalised.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka state proposal to bring forth a Bill to combat superstitions is yet to make any progress.
