As the winter months set in, they undoubtedly provide a relief from hot and dry days. However, a cold wave across northern India has left people struggling. With snowfall occurring at the Pirpanjal mountain ranges, the mercury has dipped even further, creating dense fog situations in various cities.

The cold wave has led to a sudden drop in temperature, and the fog conditions seem to be only worsening. Commuters have been extensively affected, as air, train and road traffic are facing severe visibility issues.

Flights and trains are getting delayed or even cancelled due to heavy fog disrupting visibility. Passengers have been left stranded on railway stations and airports in cities such as Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Kanpur, Varanasi and Moradabad, often without information on when the service will resume.

Both fog and smog lead to low visibility conditions. But we can distinguish between the two by measuring the humidity in the air. If humidity is more than 75%, we declare fog, and if less than 75%, we declare smog. Around 7-8 December, there will be dense fog in Delhi in the morning.
