Watch: What Happens When a Rape Survivor Seeks Help on the Streets
A viral video made by the Lebanese non-profit organisation ABAAD has brought social media face-to-face with the question: What happens when a rape survivor seeks help on the streets?
In the video, an actress named Manal plays the role of a rape survivor seeking help on the streets. And as she runs through the road, in tears and helpless, people’s sad but real reactions come out.
She is asked questions like, “Are you on drugs?”, “Are you drunk?”. People around her whisper: “She goes from guy to guy. Clearly not her first time!”, “You’re embarrassing yourself more. Don’t let anyone know,” etc.
The girl is victim-shamed and called all the bad names you can probably think of.
The video ends with the pertinent question, “Shame on who?”
Social Media Applauds Initiative
The video, uploaded on ABAAD’s Facebook page, is part of their campaign titled ‘Shame On Who?’ which aims to spread the message, “Judge the rapist. Not the victim.”
Here are some of the comments on the video, which has garnered more than two million views.
Many on social media have applauded the initiative and have narrated how they can relate to the video, which captures how society treats survivors of sexual assault.
