Just days after the government announced that it will ban the broadcast of NDTV India for a day on 9 November for broadcasting sensitive information during the Pathankot attack, they have now put a hold on the ban.
Prannoy Roy met the I&B Minister Venkaiah Naidu on 7 November, who decided to stay the ban. This ruffled a lot of feathers as people took to Twitter to voice their angst against the government.
Government Losing Supporters
Supporters of BJP who saw them as championing the cause of “nationalism”, are losing faith in the government.
They thought the government was taking a tough stance, only to find them backtracking at the end.
No-Tweet Day to Show Dissent?
Some felt the government was bowing down to NDTV for which they proposed not tweeting in their support for some days.
Rage Against NDTV
Being a seemingly liberal channel, there was considerable rage against it from the right-wing section.
Yet the journalists have displayed solidarity with their contemporary in being opposed to the ban on free speech.
The Editor’s Guild of India had released a statement after the initial announcement of the ban. In it, they condemned the government’s decision, calling it a“is a direct violation of the freedom of the media.”
Prominent journalists like Rajdeep Sardesai, Rana Ayyub, Rahul Kanwal, Praveen Swami voiced their dissent and sarcasm against the decision.
