PM Narendra Modi’s 45-minute long speech at the US Capitol was laced with humour, reference to deepening Indo-US ties, mentions of terrorism and allusions to India’s intellectual strength. He spoke unabashedly about the importance of free speech and the need to refer back to The Constitution as the “Holy Book” for all amendments.

PM Modi was given nine standing ovations during his speech, and 53 rounds of applause – it must have been reminiscent of his canvassing days back home!

Despite his silence on the ongoing controversies around beef eating, freedom of speech in universities and censorship in India, the Prime Minister spoke of freedom, democracy and equality as the “essence of the modern nation” of India.

Social media was awash with support. Here’s how #ModiInUS trended internationally last night for over 12 hours.
