On her 133rd birthday, Dr Muthulakshmi Reddi, one one of the first women doctors in India and the first woman house surgeon in the Government Maternity Hospital, Madras, gets her own google doodle.

A doctor, a surgeon, a lawmaker, a social reformer and Padma Bhushan awardee, Dr Reddi the first female legislator in India. She was appointed to the Madras legislative Council in 1927.

Dr Reddi’s birth anniversary is celebrated as Hospital Day by Tamil Nadu government hospitals every year.

A gender rights activist ahead of her times, she raised her voice for equal rights at an early age, becoming the first Indian female student at the Department of Surgery at Madras Medical College.

She founded the Women’s Indian Association in 1918.

A follower of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles, she resigned form the Madras Legislative Council to support the Satyagraha. She passed away in July, 1968.
