Former CBI Director, RK Raghavan, while talking about temple tragedies in India lashes out at the political establishment for “subjugating” the role of the police. He makes a strong argument about the politicisation of temple trusts in the country while stating examples from south India.

People with deep pockets make large donations to temple trusts and thereby earn a say in the way the temple administration is run and this, to a large extent, is the cause of mismanagement, says Raghavan. These people don’t have the necessary qualification or understanding to make the correct decisions.

However, in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Jayalalitha has invited private players & corporates to be involved in the administration of the temple which has proved to be a success, says Raghavan.

While talking about mosques and churches, Raghavan says that monitoring institution’s administrations are also plagued with red tape and corruption but have the least government interference owing to their status.

Having worked in the police and the CBI, he also claims that when it comes to large religious congregations, all permissions are governed by political pressures. In all this frenzy, human life is the casualty. You can read Raghavan’s detailed commentary on the politicisation of temple trusts on The Quint.
