With the flourishing involvement of the LGBTQIA community in every walk of life and the monumental decriminalizing of homosexuality last year, India is positively inching towards a more equal society.

A week ago the food delivery and restaurant discovery app, Zomato introduced ‘LGBTQIA tags’ for certain restaurants. This new initiative by Zomato can have several positive connotations to it. As a result, the app users were wondering what this tag exactly implies.

Durga Raghunath, the SVP of Growth for Zomato, officiated the news for new additional tag for eligible restaurants through a tweet earlier today.

In their blog, Raghunath elaborates about this newly launched tag. Zomato intends to, according to the blog, educate and encourage Indian restaurants, cafes and similar facilities to be welcoming of people’s sexual orientations and to make everyone feel comfortable in the space that they provide for public recreation.

According to estimates by Out Now Consulting, the Paris-based marketing firm, India is home to some 56 million LGBT+ adults. The World Bank estimates that homophobia costs India $31 billion annually.

This could also indicate towards introducing gay bars in country, refurnishing rules regarding stag entries, arranging a romantic date for homosexual couples without any sort of intolerance and so on. All of these, undoubtedly, sounds like a great idea.

Interestingly, a few weeks ago, a change.org petition was filed calling out Zomato for not being LGBTQIA inclusive.
