What started with a protest against the assault of two junior doctors in Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal has now taken a completely different turn, with doctors from Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities calling for a boycott, and refusing to return to OPD if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile over 100 state doctors have resigned as the unrest enters its fourth day, the impact of which is likely to majorly affect emergency healthcare across the country, especially in the North.

Apart from those from the medical industry several well known intellectuals have also come out in support of the doctors and their ongoing protest.

Filmmaker Aparna Sen has come out and spoken strongly about the issue at hand, and has also announced that she won’t be accepting any state felicitations and awards, if the demand of the protesting doctors for a secure working environment is not met by the State.

Will more and more celebrities come in support of the doctors following Sen’s footsteps?

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s four-hour ultimatum has not only failed but has worsened the situation. Even doctors under private medical institutions are showing solidarity to those protesting on the streets by wearing black bands on their arms to work.
