A day after a nursing student at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) alleged that her family was being pressurised to withdraw the police complaint against the university’s chief proctor, several BHU students on Tuesday, 4 December, carried out a protest march demanding her removal, the Times of India reported.

The protests against BHU chief proctor Royana Singh have intensified since 29 November, the day when BSc nursing students staged a sit-in with the demand that their college be recognised by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), the report said.

According to the report, a video of protesters being forcefully removed from the campus had gone viral following which Manju, the nursing student, had alleged that the chief proctor slapped her.

An FIR has been registered against the chief proctor in this regard. The 125 protesting students from the nursing department have also been booked for blocking the road, and other relevant sections on the complaint of the chief proctor, the report quoted inspector Bharat Bhushan as saying.
