“The daughter of my domestic help has got 78% in 12th with Accounts as her main subject. While I have advised her to seek admission in the regular college for BCom (preferably, with Honours) to pursue Chartered Accountants’ profession. Coming from an economically weaker section, she wants to do BCom through correspondence, while I am insisting on regular college because I feel regular ones are better in developing a personality as well. She has a feeling that there are no proper studies in regular colleges. She is Delhi-based. What is the fees structure of regular colleges for Honours and ordinary subjects?”
G C Mathur

Hello GC Mathur,

There is a lot of difference between pursuing a course in regular and distance mode. While regular courses have regular classroom sessions, the reliance on self-study is limited. When it comes to distance or correspondence courses, students need to work hard, and they rely more on self-study.

If she wants to pursue a Career in Charted Accountancy (CA), it is better to join the CA course first and apply for BCom course in correspondence mode. Nowadays, most of the CA aspirants are pursuing CA and BCom course side by side.

“I got 94.8% in my class 12 and 81.2 percentile or 218217 ranks in JEE Mains. Should I peruse BTech in a UP colleges or IP colleges since my rank isn’t good or I should get enrolled in a DU college and peruse BSc from there?”
Shilpi Jain

Dear Shilpi,

You have a good percentage in Class 12. Do you like to get into engineering or science courses? If you are planning to pursue BSc, let me clear that you have a good chance to secure admission in DU.

You can check the previous year cutoffs for DU for BSc course. DU online registration process is expected to commence in June. Pursuing BSc from DU will have excellent career prospects.

If you are willing to get into NITs with a rank of 2,18,217, you can just check the opening and closing ranks of NITs for JEE Main. If you are much sure about pursuing engineering, you can aim for an admission in UP or IP engineering colleges, as admission chances in NITs may be limited for you.

“My daughter cleared her class 12 this year from PCB and her marks are, bio-85; chemistry-92; physics-72; English-97; biotech-85. She is a bit confused about whether she should go for BBA (she is interested in commerce) or pursue biotech. She is not particularly interested in MBBS. Which would be the better option career-wise?”
Vinita Srivastava

Dear Vinita,

Don’t you think changing the stream from science to commerce in UG may be irrelevant? Your daughter has good marks in science subjects, and she will shine well if she chooses a course like Biotechnology.

However, it depends on her interest. BBA course too has good career prospects. Firstly, please ask your daughter whether she is interested in pursuing biotechnology because you mentioned that she is not interested in pursuing MBBS course only.

However, there are some chances for you to get admission in the DU fifth cutoff list. The cutoff is different for various categories like SC/ST/ OBC/ General etc.
