Over 40 lakh names have been left out of the second and final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was published on 30 July. So, what is the course of action for those who have not made the list? How do they claim inclusion?
Since this is only a draft and not a final list, people can file claims and objections. Here’s a step-by-step process of what you need to know:
When Can Claims be Filed?
If your name has been left out of the list, you have time from 30 August to 30 September to file claims and objections at NRC Seva Kendras across the state.
The final NRC will be published on 31 December 2018, the Home Ministry announced.
Applicants will need to provide proof to assert that they or their ancestors were citizens on or before 24 March 1971. Documents, including birth certificates and land records, should have been issued before the cut-off date – 24 March 1971.
What to Keep in Mind While Submitting Documents
The process will reportedly take into account the errors made when the draft was being updated. However, it is important to note that documents that do not establish the link could lead to rejection of an application.
