Prakshi Saha, who hails from Kolkata, is a student, a blogger and a gender equality advocate. The 18-year-old became an activist when she was 15 years old, through an Instagram page and has since received support and solidarity from people across the world, encouraging her to keep her activism going.
Speaking to The Quint, Prakshi says she uses her blogging skills to tell stories of people who are facing any kind of struggle with gender in order to draw attention to them and their lives. She is also a gender advocacy leader for SheSays India, a United Nations-acclaimed organisation, which works to further women’s rights and gender equality. As part of the organisation, Prakshi conducts gender sensitisation workshops in educational institutions.
Prakshi is also a global goodwill ambassador from India for Postcards for Peace, a UK-registered charity foundation and peace organisation.
Speaking to The Quint, Prakshi says that through her efforts she wants to propagate intersectional feminism and equality that transgresses all kinds of boundaries. For this, she runs a campaign called Ungender, through which she tries to shatter all kinds of preconceived notions related to gender.
Prakshi will be voting for the first time in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
As a first-time voter, the issues most important to her are gender and gender equality. Prakshi says, she is shocked by the low representation of women in the Parliament. She feels that women don’t get justice because of the lack of representation.
Gender equality is her priority when she thinks of politics, she says.
Her demand from the government is adequate representation and rights for women and the LGBTQ community. Now that Section 377 has been repealed, the community should be given representation, facilities and opportunities, for their growth and improvement. Prakshi also wants the government to take adequate measures for women’s safety and take strong action against violent sex crimes.
