Travelling while having periods can really be troublesome. With hormones throwing a fit, it could be difficult to muster the courage to embark on that long-planned trek or much-awaited soirée to the sea. But do you really need to spend the days turning and tossing in bed when you've been saving for the trip for months?

Yes, you can!

Travel Kit to the Rescue

You gotta be armed with the right things while travelling on periods – tampons, sanitary napkins, menstrual cups and the like. Some extra pads don’t hurt either. Environment-friendly options are the best bet if you are planning to take a trek in the lap of nature.

Your medical kit must have any painkillers that you depend on while on your period – along with a heating pad and hand warmer.

Lastly, ditch the tight, uncomfortable clothes for comfy clothing. With all the cramps and bloating, the last thing you would want is to feel trapped in a tight pair of jeans.

...and That's Not All

Just carrying period essentials is not enough. Make sure you have ample rolls of tissue paper and plastic bags (it would be better if you carried eco-friendly bags) to dispose of the pads. An extra bottle of water should you need to wash the menstrual cup in a place there ain’t water is also a good bet. Extra preparedness hurt no one!

Hand sanitisers also go a long way in ensuring you feel fresh on trips while on your period.

Take Loo Breaks Where You Can

Stop by toilets where you find one. This is especially true for difficult treks where you wouldn’t find toilets very often. Changing pads periodically reduces the risk of leaks and keeps you sprightly.

This is even true of walking. Take breaks in between so that you have the energy to walk for longer durations.

Eat Healthy for Cramps

Why, you may ask? While it’s true that all we want at the time is an endless supply of chocolates and lots and lots of junk food, binging on these while travelling may lead to painful cramps and bloating, making the trip difficult.

Switch to healthy snacks, nuts and fruits instead; you’ll feel much lighter. Most importantly, stay hydrated. Sip water at regular intervals to avoid weakness and keep those cramps in check. Sipping on glucose water (it keeps you energised) also goes a long way when travelling on periods.

On second thought, chocolates aren’t so bad actually. Carry a bar or two of dark chocolates and you're good to go!

Don't Forget to Live It Up!

Remember, travelling on your period is not a handicap – so don’t treat it like one. Read books, enjoy the bounties of nature, let go of all your worries; don’t treat the travel time any differently. A little preparedness and you can make this one as enjoyable as any of your other trips!
