Warsheeda, 20, along with 34 other girls from the village of Marora in the backward Mewat region of Haryana has made about 1,000 rakhis and have sent these sacred threads to the US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this auspicious occasion of Rakshabandhan.

“We have made these Rakhis for US President Donald Trump on this pious festival so that relationship between the two countries continue to flourish,” says Warsheeda.

This Muslim Majority village has been “symbolically” named after US President Donald Trump as a “gesture to further strengthen the US-India ties”, says the NGO which has adopted this village.

The village has been in news since NGO Sulabh International Social Service Organisation (SISSO) chief, Bindeshwar Pathak, declared that it will be named as ‘Trump’s village.

However, the district administration has called the renaming of the village illegal and asked the organisation to remove boards stating the new title.

But today, with the support of all the village elders, these young girls gathered and collectively presented the rakhis to the US president and to the Indian Prime Minister.

As the young girls aspire to get educated, they trust Prime Minister Modi like their brother, for they believe he will help them pursue their dreams. These girls face a lot of social barriers as most of them are not allowed to take up their higher education after the primary level.

I have dropped out of school after my 8th standard as my parents did not allow me to travel out of the village to pursue my higher education. Our school only has classes till the 5th standard

She added that one of the reason her parents did not allow her to take up higher education was because her father is a labourer and affordability was an issue.

The rakhis have photos of Donald Trump and Narendra Modi, which were sent today through cargo so that it reaches the US president on 7 August, the day of Rakshabandhan. The villagers are also sending invitations to the two leaders to visit their village.

Widows of the village have also expressed a desire to meet Modi on Rakshabandhan at his residence in the national capital

The NGO has also recently constructed 95 toilets in the Marora village as part of PM Modi’s flagship programme Swachh Bharat Mission.
