In Stats: Ashwin Breaks Bishan Bedi’s Record With 25th Test Fifer

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up six wickets to lead India to a dramatic 75-run victory over Australia in the second test on Tuesday, the win enabling the hosts to level the four-match series at 1-1.

On a M. Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch offering unpredictable bounce for the pacemen and sharp turn for the spinners, Australia were bundled all out for 112 in their second innings late on the fourth day after being set a victory target of 188.

Here are a few key stats and career landmarks from the match:

• Australia’s second innings total of 112 in Bangalore is their fourth-lowest total in Test matches in India.

• Defending 188 was going to be a huge challenge, it had only been accomplished twice previously in Test matches played in India. But Ravichandran Ashwin and company collaborated well to defend 188 – the third-lowest target defended in Test matches in India.

• Ashwin, who returned with figures of 6-41 in the fourth innings, climbed one place up in the list of India's leading wicket-takers in Test cricket. The off-spinner surpassed Bishan Singh Bedi's tally of 266 wickets and is now India's fifth-most-successful bowler in Test cricket.

• During the course of his six-wicket haul, Ashwin also picked up 200 wickets in Test matches at home. The off-spinner reached the milestone in 30 Test matches – making him the quickest to reach the milestone.
• Ashwin reached the milestone five Test matches quicker than Anil Kumble, who was the previous quickest to 200 wickets at home.

• Ashwin's six-wicket haul also meant that he had equalled Harbhajan Singh's tally of 25 5-wicket hauls – the most by an Indian off-spinner. Among Indian spinners, only Anil Kumble has more five-wicket hauls; the current Indian coach has 35 five-wicket hauls.

• Earlier in the day, the Australian bowler who hastened the close of India's second innings was Josh Hazlewood. The 26-year old returned with carer-best figures of 6-67 and helped his team restrict India’s lead to 187 runs.
