KKR’s Sunil Narine played a starring role against RCB in the Eliminator in IPL 2021 in Sharjah as he picked 4 wickets and scored a handy 26 to help his side progress to Qualifier 2 in the tournament.

Narine’s fantastic performance also included the scalp of Virat Kohli for 39, who ends his tenure as RCB skipper without an IPL title.

KKR initially restricted RCB to 138/7 before chasing it down with a few hurdles on the way.

Batting first, Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal had their task cut out against KKR’s wily bowlers. The two openers made a steady start, picking up three boundaries in the first couple of overs before playing out Varun Chakravarthy with caution. While the boundaries weren’t the easiest to find, the openers ran sharply between the wickets as KKR fielders inside the circle were caught on their heels, repeatedly.

After the first three overs which saw KKR keep the batters under some control, the introduction of Lockie Ferguson and then Shivam Mavi’s second over really helped RCB go through the gears and put the pressure on the fielding side as both overs produced 25 runs.

However, Ferguson struck immediately in the sixth over, castling Padikkal, who chopped it on for 21. RCB finished the powerplay with KS Bharat joining Kohli and the score on 53/1.

The wicket slowed down RCB as KKR turned to their spinners with Shakib, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine kept things really quiet, putting pressure on Bharat and Kohli. With the pressure building, Bharat decided to go downtown in the tenth over against Narine and holed out at long off where Venkatesh Iyer took an easy catch. He was dismissed for 9 off 16 as Glenn Maxwell joined Kohli. RCB were 70/2 at the midway stage.

Maxwell and Kohli threatened to get going briefly, adding 19 runs to the cause before Narine struck again. Under pressure, Kohli looked to go over cow corner against Narine, who snuck through the gap and knocked over the woodwork as the skipper had to walk back for 39 in the 13th over.

ABD joined Maxwell in the middle and RCB got their hopes up as they started off brightly adding 14 runs before Narine struck yet again. The spinner went through ABD's defenses and clean bowled him for 11 as RCB were in a spot of bother with 5 overs to go.

Shahbaz Ahmed joined Maxwell, and along expected lines found the going tough as KKR’s bowlers continued to be miserly as the death overs approached. RCB were 111/4 with 4 overs to go.

Narine bowled the 17th and conceded just 2 runs but more importantly picked the wicket of Maxwell for 15. The Australian was looking to accelerate and was deceived by Narine's guile, as he finished with figures of 4/21.

Mavi then bowled a six run over as RCB moved along to 119/5 in 18 overs. Lockie Ferguson picked the wicket of Shahbaz Ahmed for 13 in the 19th over before Mavi, in the final over, produced 12 runs to give RCB a total of 138/7.

While Narine and Ferguson picked the wickets Varun Chakravarthy was his usual economical self, finishing his spell with figures of 0/20. Narine picked 4 wickets while Ferguson bagged a couple. RCB didn't hit a six during their innings.

Chasing a tricky 139, Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer started off well, much like RCB, getting the boundaries with a few crisp and stylish shots. The right-hander took George Garton for a flurry of boundaries as KKR raced away to 40/0 after 5 overs.

However, the in-form Harshal Patel came into bowl in the sixth over and immediately dismissed Gill for 29 as he looked to clear the ground and was caught by ABD. With Rahul Tripathi joining Iyer, KKR moved on to 48/1 as the new man rounded off the over with a boundary.

Tripathi wasn’t able to stick around for too long though and was trapped LBW by ace spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the seventh over for 6. The decision was initially in the batters favour before an angry Kohli took a review and the replays turned it over. While RCB seemed to putting the brakes on KKR, they picked off 13 from Maxwell’s second over and were lucky to see Iyer be dropped in the deep by Shahbaz as well. At the midway stage, KKR needed 65 more to win.

Kohli turned to Harshal after that and he produced a wicket immediately as Iyer was dismissed for 26, caught behind by Bharat as KKR were 79/3.

However, in walked Narine and hammered three monster sixes of Dan Christian in what was a 22-run 12th over, which put KKR back in the box seat.

But while Narine started off by releasing some pressure, Rana put his side in a bit of a bother as he tried to slog Chahal over long on and ended up caught by ABD for 23.

Dinesh Karthik and Narine put on 15 before the left hander was clean bowled by Mohammed Siraj with 14 to win. And before the over ended Siraj had Karthik caught behind for 10.

Shakib Al Hasan and Eoin Morgan then wrapped it up from there on in, knocking off the runs with ease and with two deliveries to go.
