28 Dead After Bus Falls Into Gorge Near Shimla, PM Expresses Grief

The bus rolled into a 700-metre deep gorge in Rampur area of Shimla on the Hindustan-Tibet National Highway.

At least 28 people have died and nine others have been injured after a bus rolled into a 700-metre deep gorge in the Rampur area of Shimla on the Hindustan-Tibet National Highway in Himachal Pradesh. The accident site is about 140 km from the state capital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident.

The bus, carrying 36 passengers, was travelling from Reckong Peo in Kinnaur to Nauni in Solan when the mishap occurred. Bodies of all 28 victims have been recovered and 11 of them have been identified, deputy commissioner, Shimla, Rohan Chand Thakur said.

The deceased include 18 men, 9 women and a child.

Four of the seriously injured persons have been referred to IGMC Shimla and four others are undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital Khaneri.

The National Disaster Response Force had also been rushed to the spot to supervise relief and rescue operations.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi also expressed her distress over the incident and asked the Himachal Pradesh government to take immediate rescue and relief measures.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident. However, preliminary investigations indicate that a tyre burst led to the accident.

The deputy commissioner said that an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 has been given to the next of kin of the deceased.
