A Dalit groom was dragged off his mare and attacked with beer bottles by a mob of upper caste people in Udaipur district.

The groom, Kailash Meghwal, was leading his wedding procession on the mare, when a group of people armed with beer bottles and other sharp edged weapons forced him down and beat him up, reported The Hindustan Times. The report further added that women in the group attacked women who were part of the wedding procession, and abused them.

The police filed an FIR and detained four people from the mob, booking them under the SC/ST (Prevention of atrocities) Act, alongside relevant sections of the IPC.

“To provide protection to the victim’s family, we have deployed policemen to avoid any untoward incident," Ghasa police station SHO Ramesh Kavia told The Indian Express.

This is the latest in a series of incidents against Dalit communities for indulging in a ritual that is generally practiced by the upper caste sections of the community.
