A resident of the Haryana-Delhi border was caught trying to sneak in a pistol and ammunition, in the Delhi Metro on Sunday afternoon. The Capital city is still on high alert after the jat community threatened to protest.
The man who was identified as Badarpur resident Ramesh Kumar Das denied being the owner of the pistol. He told the CISF guards that someone must have slipped it in his bag.
Jat Agitation Postponed After Talks Between Govt and Jat Leaders
The Jat agitation was postponed on 19 March following several rounds of parleys in Delhi between the government and prominent Jat leaders spearheading the community's agitation.
"Centre and state will soon begin the process of giving reservation, following the Delhi High court order," Khattar told reporters in a joint press conference along with All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti Chairperson Yashpal Malik.
However, Delhi, remained on alert with restrictions on exit in place at four Metro stations. Metro stations in Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad will remain open on Monday, but commuters will not be allowed to exit at Yellow Line's four stations, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Udyog Bhavan and Lok Kalyan Marg. Entry will be allowed at these stations, an advisory by Delhi Metro stated.
Internet services, which had been suspended in many “sensitive” districts of Haryana, including Rohtak, Jhajjar, Sonepat, Hisar, Sirsa, Bhiwani and Kaithal, were restored on Sunday evening.
18 Police Personnel Injured in Clash
Eighteen police personnel, including an SP and a DSP, were among 35 injured on 19 March when Jat protesters clashed with police on being prevented from marching towards Delhi.
The clash took place on the Sirsa-Hisar-Delhi Highway near Dhani Gopal village in Fatehabad district. The police used cane-charge and tear gas to disperse the protesters, who pelted stones and set vehicles on fire.
What do The Jats Want?
The Jat agitation first reared its head in February 2016, after protesters, seeking that the community be brought under the OBC category, damaged a water treatment plant, interrupting water supply to a number of areas in the National Capital.
This year, after having called for a boycott of Holi (13 March) in Haryana, agitating Jats announced plans to take their protest to Delhi. The Akhil Bhartiya Jat Arakashan Sangharsh Samiti threatened to ‘gherao’ Parliament beginning 20 March.
The group also called for dharnas on the Delhi border, blocking all highways, to press for their demands for reservation.
Apart from reservation in government jobs and educational institutions, the protesters also want jobs for the next of kin of those killed in violence in the agitation last year. Other demands include compensation for the injured, withdrawal of cases against them and action against officers who ordered action against the agitating Jats.
