Jawaharlal Nehru University’s chief proctor resigned from his post, allegedly over differences with the administration, Hindustan Times reported.

Chief Proctor AP Dimri, who is responsible for inquiry into cases on indiscipline within the university campus was also leading the inquiry into the case of missing student, Najeeb Ahmed.

Although Dimri did not clarify the reasons behind his resignation, it is known that he had sent showcause notices to at least four the students affiliated to ABVP after Najeeb went missing since 15 October.

Sources said the differences between Dimri and the JNU administration emerged only after he sent the showcause notices.

Quoting JNU officials, HT reported:

His resignation letter does not cite any reasons. There is no question of bypassing his authority. The university works through a set of rules and norms.

However, sources close to Dimri, however, said:

He felt it was a matter of principles and that the administration should look into why students had been protesting and sitting on hunger strike again and again. There is so much discontent. A university exists because of students and if there are no students, then there is no university.

This is the second time that a chief proctor resigned since the appointment of the new vice-chancellor.
