The Indian Army will finally get an extremely essential piece of equipment, that is a helmet, with modern design and tech, a full two decades after the last.

A helmet, like a bullet-proof jacket, has the potential to stand between life and death during combat. The new helmets are designed to bear the impact of a 9 mm ammunition fired from a short range, NDTV reported. The new helmets can also be paired with communicating devices.

Kanpur-based MKU Industries have been contracted to manufacture 1.58 lakh new helmets in a 180 crore rupees deal.

MKU is an exporter of bulletproof jackets and helmets all over the world.

Only the army’s elite para special forces were equipped with Israeli Glass Reinforced Plastic helmets. The infantry has been using heavy, uncomfortable helmets unsuitable during combat. An alternate solution to the old fashioned helmets were the bullet-proof ‘patka’, with limited protection on the forehead and the back of the head.
