1. Govind Pansare Murder: Witness Claims Prime Accused Tawade Asked Him For Revolvers in 2013

A witness in Communist leader Govind Pansare's murder case informed police that arrested accused Virendra Tawade had paid him a surprise visit at his workshop in April 2013 on the pretext of checking on his health, but asked him for information on revolvers.

Witness Arun Sadwilkar's statement is crucial in the case against Tawade.

Sadwilkar, claimed Tawade informed him of an additional responsibility entrusted on him by the Sanatan Sanstha of which he was a member. Sadwilkar said Tawade later called him 'from a payphone' and said a man would meet him with the weapons. The reason why Tawade sought him out, said Sadwilkar, was because in 1985-88, he used to deal in country-made pistols as he had no other source of income then.

On 30 November, a special investigation team had filed a supplementary chargesheet in Kolhapur and named Sanatan Sanstha members Vinay Pawar and Sarang Akolkar as the men who shot at Pansare and his wife Uma in 2015.

2. Woman’s Murder Triggers Riot in Satara Village

A newly-wed woman's murder instigated her irate relatives to resort to rioting in and around the murder suspect's residence at Panchashilnagar in Chinchner-Vandan village late on Tuesday night.

The victim, Aruna Mohite (21), from Chinchner-Vandan, was married for two months to a man from Vadgaon-Nimbalkar in Baramati taluka of Pune district and was residing at her marital home. On 30 November, she went to meet a friend and was reported missing since then. Her body was found near Thoseghar on Tuesday.

4. ‘Suspended’ Bengal BJP Leader Held With Rs 33 Lakh; Most of it in Rs 2,000 Notes

A BJP leader has been arrested in Kolkata with unaccounted cash worth Rs 33 lakh and illicit arms and ammunition, barely a week after police arrested a youth wing leader of the party in Tamil Nadu and seized Rs 20.5 lakh in cash, including wads of new Rs 2,000 notes.

Manish Sharma contested the last assembly election from Raniganj on a BJP ticket. Six others, including a Rajesh Jha, alias Raju were held by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police on Monday evening from an apartment in Baguiati on the outskirts of Kolkata. They were produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody.

“Out of Rs 33 lakh, Rs 31 lakh was in new currency in Rs 2,000 denomination. Seven firearms were also seized from their possession,” said an STF sleuth.

The BJP sought to control the damage following the incident. “Sharma was suspended from the party in June because of his illegal activities,” claimed Sayantan Bose, the state BJP secretary.

5. Cyber Crimes Duping People in Mumbai Post Demonetisation

The Cyber Crime Cell of Mumbai Police has recorded several complaints from people who have allegedly fallen prey to a new trick by fraudsters, since the demonetisation.

A caller pretending to be from the Reserve Bank of India is allegedly telling prospective victims that as part of the demonetisation campaign, after Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, the federal bank will also soon stop the use of debit/credit cards for some time.

The victims are told that they will be allowed to use their cards only once they share their bank and card details along with the four-digit PIN.

6. Customs Scanning Fliers Bringing in Foreign Currency in Mumbai

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Mumbai customs is keeping a close eye on flyers bringing in foreign currency after receiving intelligence that some people are converting the demonetised notes into foreign currency to save the money.

“There are reports that people are converting their old currency to foreign currency and then taking it out of the country, only to carry it back again. They declare this foreign currency before the customs and make it legal,”said a senior officer.

The rules say that any person can bring foreign currency to India and there is no limit on it. However, declaring the currency on a Currency Declaration Form (CDF) in two scenarios is mandatory. First, where the value of the notes exceed US$5,000 or equivalent and second, where the aggregate of the foreign exchange (in the form of currency notes, bank notes, traveller cheques etc.) exceeds US$ 10,000 or equivalent.

The same killer could be behind the murder of two women – one whose decapitated corpse was found in a south Delhi sewer on 25 November, and another whose mutilated body was found around 100 meters away a week before.

RP Upadhyay, Joint Commissioner of Police (southeastern range), suspected that both the Munirka murders were connected because the women knew each other.

“We have identified the two deceased, though the head of one of them is yet to be traced. Both of them were brutally murdered over a monetary dispute. We are close to cracking the case. The prime accused has been identified,” he said.

8. Cross Complaints Filed After Communal Clash in Surat

Cross complaints have been registered on Wednesday after a communal clash in Paal area of Surat late Tuesday night. Three persons suffered stab wounds and four students of a Madrasa were injured in stone-pelting during the violence, which had been sparked following a confrontation between staffers of the madrasa and a family of 35 members.

Surat police commissioner Satish Sharma had deployed a large number of police personnel at the spot to prevent any untoward incident.
