The cause of death of Minhaj Ansari, who breathed his last on 9 October at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has been established as "shock and haemorrhage".

He allegedly died due to police torture in Narayanpur police station of Jamtara district in Jharkhand.

The post-mortem report also adds that the viscera has been preserved for further laboratory examination.

The post-mortem which has also been videographed, mentions tragic details, reported The Indian Express.

According to the post-mortem, there were abrasions on the body and stomach of the victim. The cause of the registered injuries is said to be some 'hard and blunt substance'.

The report however makes no mention of the victim being afflicted with any illness, specifically encephalitis. But sources in the hospital claim that only further investigation can verify this with certainty. Therefore, a viscera examination is awaited.

Jamara Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Kumar Dubey said that a murder case has been filed against the accused Sub-Inspector and investigations are underway. He added that they will proceed only after the final report arrives.

Dubey also said that though the report makes no mention of any medical illness, Ansari was being treated for encephalitis in the Medical Hospital in Dhanbad and later in RIMS. The Jamara SP could not be contacted for comment.

The Patalipura Medical College had suspected that Ansari had encephalitis because he had high fever and was unconscious despite not having typhoid and malaria. However, no conclusive medical test was done.

Earlier on 2 October, Ansari had posed with a calf and then with meat and posted photographs of the same on WhatsApp . For Sonu Singh, a VHP office-bearer of Jamtara, this was a message about beef consumption. Based on his complaint, police registered a case against Ansari.

He was arrested the very night. On 4 October, his condition worsened. He was taken to Sadar Hospital and later to PMCH in Dhanbad. When his health didn't improve, he was referred to the RIMS on 6 October.

Sub-inspector Harish Pathak had allegedly assaulted Ansari's relatives in Dhanbad. Pathak was initially suspended and charged with attempt to murder when allegations of torture came to the forefront. Now, after Ansari's death, the FIR is converted to that of murder.
