Sony Pictures Network’s channel, Sony Le PLEX HD, has been reportedly asked to drop the broadcast of the Oscar winning film The Danish Girl by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). According to sources close to the channel, CBFC has communicated to them that the film is unsuitable for viewing by Indian audiences below 18.
The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, was to be aired on Sony Le PLEX on Sunday, 26 March. The film has Eddie playing Elbe, one of the first recipients of a sex reassignment surgery and it won an Oscar for Alicia in the Best Supporting Actress category last year.
The channel tweeted about their inability to telecast the film as they had not received the necessary certification to broadcast it.
The CBFC is empowered to recommend video and audio cuts for any film that is submitted to them for television broadcast. In case of The Danish Girl, the CBFC seems to have decided to just drop the telecast of the film altogether rather than censor it. The board apparently has a problem with the ‘theme’ of the film - about a transgender pioneer.
The Danish Girl was surprisingly released in theatres in India without any cuts and with an ‘A’ certificate last year.
