National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, on Thursday, 25 October, said India needs a strong and a stable government for the next 10 years as “weak coalitions will be bad” for the country.

“India will need a strong, stable and a decisive government for the next 10 years to achieve our national, political, economic and strategic objectives. Weak coalition will be bad for India,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Speaking at the Sardar Patel Memorial lecture 2018 in New Delhi on ‘Dream India 2030-Avoiding the Pitfalls’, Doval said in his speech that false narrative is eroding the essence of democracy.

“In a democracy, people have the right to be informed, but today, false narratives have become a problem. It is the responsibility of every individual, every media to check this menace. I am told there are separate agencies only engaged in false narratives.”

“The populist measures shouldn’t take precedence over national requirements. It is a temptation, that is you take the thing or you refrain from doing the thing, which is in national interest. But probably for a short time they may cause some pain to the people.”

Doval spoke about Sardar Patel’s vision for the country, saying that India is poised to become a major power. In order to do so, Doval said, the country needs to invest in the private sector that would generate employment.

“See how China’s Alibaba and others have become big companies, how much Chinese govt has supported them. We want that the Indian private sector companies should perform and promote Indian strategic interest.”

Highlights From Doval’s Speech

  • India cannot afford to be a soft power for the next few years because it will be compelled to take hard decisions.
  • India needs a strong, stable and decisive government for the next 10 years. Weak coalitions will be bad for India.
  • All defence hardware must be 100% transfer of technology. This is the policy of the new government.
  • If we have to become a major power, then our economy has to be big. It has to be globally competitive and that can be only when it is technologically ahead.
  • The populist measures shouldn't take precedence over national requirements. It is a temptation that is you take the thing or you refrain from doing the thing which are in the national interest. But probably for a short time they may cause some pain to the people.
  • We are not governed by people's representative, but by the laws made by them, therefore the rule of law is extremely important.
