Pakistani Singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who will soon release his new album, speaks exclusively to Quint Hindi.

Khan explains that the secret to his mesmerising voice is his long hours of practice and expresses his regret over the unfair comparison with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

From his advice to upcoming singers to his favourite Bollywood voice, Khan gets candid with Quint Hindi.

What is your favourite song?

I have sung many songs, I like them all. I do not have a favourite. I cannot choose one. They are all close to my heart.

Who is your favourite singer in Bollywood?

Mohammed Rafi, I like Kishore Kumar’s songs. I am very fond of Lata Mangeshkar as well. I am also Asha Tai’s big fan. From this era, I like Shreya Ghosal and Sonu Nigam.

How do you feel when you are compared to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan?

It’s very disappointing, there is no comparison between a father and a son. He taught me. People like Nusrat Fateh Ali are born once in a century.

How long do you practice?

I practice for ten hours a day. I will be found with a harmonium whenever I am free.

Your advice for upcoming singers?

Focus on what you are learning. Sing only what your throat permits.
