Once she’s takes the sit opposite Bachchan, the latter starts talking about how Sudha Murthy had to fight against all odds to pursue a career in engineering. While talking about it she says,

“In 1968 I decided to be an engineer. My grandmother said that I can’t do that otherwise no one in our community would be able to get married. Everyone advised me against it but I decided to pursue it anyway. In my college, there were 599 boys and I was the only girl.”

But that wasn’t all. Once she made it to the college, there was a whole other set of challenges to overcome. She adds, “My principal said that I would be given admission only on three conditions: that I would wear a saree; that I wouldn’t enter the canteen; and I wouldn’t talk to boys.”

Murthy’s response to these conditions was cheeky. She said, “I agreed to wear a sari. But the hospital canteen was so bad that I never felt like going there.” Coming to the third condition she said, “For one year I did not talk to the boys. Then when they saw that I was topping, they started speaking to me in my second year of college.”

Murthy also spoke about how the college did not have a ladies washroom and it made her realise the importance of toilets. “That’s why, as a part of Infosys Foundation, we built 16,000 toilets.”

She further shares anecdotes from her life and work as a philanthropist who has worked at grassroots level.
