After Netflix web series Bard of Blood, Emraan Hashmi is back with thriller The Body, which also stars Shobhita Dhulipala and Rishi Kapoor. Directed by Jeetu Joseph, the film is a remake of a 2012 Spanish crime drama.

The trailer is intriguing but what caught our attention was the last scene where we see Emraan Hashmi reach into a toilet, take a piece of paper out and stuff it in his mouth when his attempt to flush it down fails. So when we met him for an interview this had to be our first question.

I am here with a man, who has put his hand inside the toilet, taken out a piece of paper and put it in his mouth. I mean, did you really do this?

I really did it, and I made sure that commode was a new one. So I did my little ribbon-cutting on the set. Yeah, so that was the first most important thing because I didn’t want to put my hand into a s**t pot that had been used before. So I made them get it to the van first, the make-up van. I made them open it and make sure it goes there, they put Bisleri water into it.

Rishi Kapoor is in this film. He’s known for being temperamental, but how was he on the sets?

No, he was a sweetheart. I think he was fantastic. I had this perception of him. Yeah, I think for his tweets and his demeanour. I thought that he would fly off the handle a lot, but he didn’t. He was extremely professional, he was always on time, gave his 12 hours every day, which is very heartening, and never threw a fit. Maybe twice or thrice. But that’s important because on a film set, it is so indisciplined that sometimes you need like a prefect or a teacher to kind of shout and say “Quiet!” And he is senior. So when he talks, everyone listens. So that was very important.

And he was going through cancer treatment during the shoot?

Oh, no, no. We had shot the film. There was a little bit left. There was some dub left, the entire dub actually. And he fell ill. This was like four months into it. So post that he fell ill, and then he was rushed to the States where he got treated, and I think it was a 11-month treatment. But it’s great that he’s back. He is looking extremely healthy now.

Recently there has been a petition to censor content on OTT platforms. And a lot of debate has been happening about shows like Sacred Games and The Family Man for their political content. What do you think about censorship?

I don’t think it should be censored because, you know, we already have such a big problem with our films. We can’t really tell the stories the way you want to tell it entirely. I mean, I know times when the writers and directors actually omit stuff on the page because they feel that the censor board will not allow this. But if you’re a creative person and you’re giving it a rating, it’s very important to kind of say the story the way you want to say it, which unfortunately, is not the way it is. And OTT platforms is where they’re making a lot of like pathbreaking stuff now. Content that, you know, the kind of content that will not get released in cinema halls, if it’s even remotely political or anything. So I think at least leave this platform alone, it is very important.

Have you started working on Chehre with Amitabh Bachchan?

Oh! I’ve already done one big schedule with him. We’ve shot for 35-40 days. And that’s done. I am shooting again with him in Poland on the 18th of next month.

And how has it been?

Fantastic. It was everything I thought it would be. Extremely professional. You know, he’s all there when he’s working on the firm. Rehearsed, really, really good with you. Obviously, I mean, he is a mega star though, he comes with that kind of expertise and knowledge and experience. And it was just great working with him.

One thing you’ve learned from him?

Passion. I think being passionate. I don’t know if I would really have a passion for so many decades. I hope I do. But it’s so amazing to see someone who has. He’s proved everything and more, and he still gets up in the morning with the same zest with that same zeal and goes and performs for films, which is great.
