Mom is one of this year’s most awaited films, starring as it does Sridevi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sajal Ali and Akshaye Khanna. And the first song of the film, O Sona Tere Liye, is a melodious number from AR Rahman’s repertoire. Written by Irshad Kamil and sung by Shashaa Tirupati and Rahman himself, the lovely song explores the emotional timbre of a mother’s prayers and dreams for her daughter.

AR Rahman tweeted the number, saying that it was conceived, composed and sung all in the course of last week.

The picturisation is sensitive too, with the focus on Sajal and her self-discovery while on a holiday, as her stepmother - Sridevi - looks on. Watch the song here:

While it might not go down as one of Rahman’s best, the number does strike a poignant chord.
