‘Commando 3’ Suffers From an Annoyingly Simple Plot

Hai koi aisa officer jo mudde ki jad tak hi na jaaye par jad hi ukhaad de (Is there an officer who not just identifies the root of the problem but gets rid of it completely?),” bellows someone, and that’s the cue for our chiselled, muscular hero to be present at our service. Commando 3, following the footsteps of its predecessors, is about a one man army who can bend his body in different unbelievable positions and beat his opponents to a pulp, all in the name of deshbhakti !

Helmed by Aditya Datt, this time too Karanveer Singh Dogra (Vidyut Jammwal) is on a mission to decimate the mastermind who is planning a deadly attack on India. The introductory scene is a distasteful and enraging one, wherein a bunch of pehelwans try to molest young schoolgirls and then Dogra, accompanied by a rousing background score, comes to their rescue.

This is a black-and-white world with the good Muslim versus bad Muslim binary being the mainstay. Brainwashed youngsters and a half-baked terror plot is uncovered, and then the action shifts to London.

Reprising her role as officer Bhavna Reddy is Adah Sharma. Wide eyed and with a “now there now gone” accent, they set off on their mission, with crowd pleasing dialogues always round the corner. “Arre tum toh jazbaati ho (You are quite emotional),” says Bhavna, and Jamwal retorts “Nahi bas Bharatwadi hoon (No, I am just an Indian)”. This is one of the many such exquisitely written lines.

Soon, we meet Buraq Ansari (Gulshan Devaiah), the religious fundamentalist who has an evil plot designed to cause maximum damage to India. There is also Angira Dhar who joins Team Commando as part of the British Intelligence. It doesn’t help that the screenplay lets off steam early in the film. We know the enemy, and the story isn’t riddled with thrills, but one is glad to see Gulshan Devaiah given more screen time. With him it almost seems like a different movie. Devaiah owns Buraq and plays the role with a steely gaze. Buraq is a complex character, and Devaiah breathes a steady sharp ruthlessness to it. The rather convincing British accent that he quietly slips in, chewing every word, the menacing tone and demeanour is quite impressive. It is therefore a pity that his character is so underwritten and the plot so simplistic that there is only so much that one can do.

The ladies, Angira Dhar and Adah Sharma get ample time as they pack some punches, and Vidtyut Jammwal, with his gravity defying stunts, is at times goddamn hard to look away from.

The only problem is that without the requisite emotional play-off and a script that is exasperatingly simplistic, it’s like Commando 3 itself is running on muscle memory.

The chase and stunts are going to be the primary lure but Commando 3’s attempt at a plot is too contrived to be taken seriously .
