A Bengaluru civil court on Tuesday issued an ex interim stay order on the release of Yash starrer Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), that was set to hit the screens on Friday.  However, the producers of the film confirmed to TNM that they have not received any intimation from the court and the film will be released across theatres in Karnataka and elsewhere.

The 10th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in Bengaluru on Thursday ordered a stay against the release of the film till the representatives of the film producer appeared before the court. The next date of hearing of the case has been fixed on January 7, 2019.

The order comes after a petition was filed by a person called Venkatesh G against Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale Films, and Lakshmi Narayana of Arya Films.

One more petition had been filed accusing that the movie was defaming Kolar Gold Fields. The petition files by two persons, A Yogesh and Ratan S, says that the makers of the film were "attempting to mislead the next generation of society about the impression of Kolar Gold Fields by screening in the title of KGF (caption - from the streets of Mumbai to the bloody gold mines of Kolar). The name of Kolar Gold Fields is defamed for the purpose of marketing the film".

The petitioner had asked for a temporary injunction on the release of the film and had also submitted posters of the film showing bloody gold mines.  The petitioner had claimed that the movie is based on the life of notorious rowdy Thangam and that he held the rights for that story.

The big-budget film was set to release on Friday in over 400 theatres in the state and in over 1,500 theatres in the country in five different languages - Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam - simultaneously giving it a pan-Indian opening.

However, the film's release in Bengaluru where several shows have been sold out, and there was speculation about the release briefly following the stay order.

The film is set in 1970s Kolar and traces the journey of a gangster in search of gold in Kolar's infamous Gold Fields.

A Bengaluru-based lawyer Faizan Assad said the producers can go ahead with the release of the movie as they are yet to be served a notice.

“Notice needs to be served otherwise they won't be knowing that there is a stay. Definitely the opp party will serve the notice through police and it may be stopped,” he said, adding this injunction can be challenged by the producers at the Karnataka High Court.
