Even as Nandita Das’ Manto gets screened at the 71st Cannes Film Festival, the film’s teaser has been released. And as expected, it is a gripping tale of a man who wrote and spoke as he thought and refused to toe social norms while battling personal demons.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui can be safely said to have turned in an explosive performance as Saadat Hasan Manto, as has Rasika Duggal as his wife, Safiyah. The teaser shows Manto the family man, and Manto the writer, rebelling against hypocrisies and fighting court cases against his books, even as he succumbs to alcohol.
